Kyrie Irving Showcases Indigenous-Inspired Anta Sneakers in Mavericks’ Western Conference Finals Victory
Dallas, TX – On May 22, NBA star Kyrie Irving, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, made a significant statement on and off the court during the Dallas Mavericks’ Game 1 triumph over the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals. The standout point guard debuted a unique iteration of his Anta Kai 1 sneakers, dubbed “Chief Hélà,” which pay homage to his Native American heritage.
Irving’s latest signature shoe, developed in collaboration with Chinese sportswear brand Anta Sports, features a moccasin-inspired design with suede tassels and a tonal brown color scheme. Additional tassels hang from the collar, and a honey-yellow sole completes the look, celebrating his rich cultural background.
This isn’t the first time Irving has incorporated his heritage into his athletic gear. During the 2023 All-Star game, he sported a similar fringe-adorned pair of Nike Kyrie 8s, a subtle statement following his departure from Nike after controversial remarks.
Irving’s deep connection to his heritage traces back to his mother, Elizabeth Larson, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Despite being adopted and separated from the reservation, Irving has consistently honored his lineage. His public acknowledgment of his heritage came during a 2016 Christmas interview with ESPN, and he further solidified this connection with a visit to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in 2018. There, he participated in a traditional naming ceremony, receiving the name “Little Mountain” or “Hélà” in Lakota, reflecting his family’s roots.
Throughout his career, Irving has been a staunch supporter of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation, donating millions in aid during the COVID-19 pandemic. In August 2021, he formalized his tribal affiliation by enrolling as a member, a significant moment marked by the presentation of a star quilt.
The Anta Kai 1, Irving’s first signature sneaker with Anta, launched in March 2024, and has been a commercial success with six sold-out colorways, many inspired by his Native American heritage. Irving joined Anta after parting ways with Nike in July 2023, joining NBA players Spencer Dinwiddie, Klay Thompson, and Gordon Hayward.
The Anta Kai 1 “Chief Hélà” will be available for general release later this summer, retailing at approximately $125.
The Dallas Mavericks currently lead the Minnesota Timberwolves 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals. Game Five is scheduled for Friday night at 8:30 p.m. EDT.
