Sasha Velour Dishes on Her Show-Stopping L.A. Pride Ensemble and Drag Philosophy

“My outfits are always in service of the performance,” declares Sasha Velour, the dazzling star of “We’re Here,” as she reveals the meticulous process behind selecting her attire for Pride Month.

In anticipation of her electrifying performance at the Los Angeles Pride in the Park concert on June 8, headlined by Ricky Martin, the RuPaul’s Drag Race alum shared her sartorial strategy during a Saturday morning Zoom call.

“I’m channeling a beauty pageant winner who can’t quite let go of her crown,” Velour explained, hinting at the playful narrative driving her performance and costume for the event. “Totally fiction, of course,” she quipped, before taking the stage with her “We’re Here” co-stars Jaida Essence Hall, Latrice Royale, and Priyanka.

For the L.A. Pride event, Velour crafted a striking look: a bright orange spaghetti strap dress that radiated L.A. vibes and exuded summer sexiness. “I know this is drag outdoors in the summertime. We always have to be mindful of that,” she noted, emphasizing the practical considerations of outdoor drag. Exclusive photos and behind-the-scenes videos shared with The Hollywood Reporter showcased her meticulous preparation.

Continuing the former pageant queen theme, Velour adorned her outfit with an abundance of jewels, packing as many as her luggage could hold. “I’ll bring the sunshine,” she joked, referencing the overcast morning sky.

Makeup, a critical component of Velour’s ensemble, featured a bold departure from her usual style. “I’m doing an orange glossy lip to tie in the dress, which is very out of my comfort zone,” she admitted. “I’m usually a red glitter lip girl, but it just… that’s not the fantasy for this outfit.” Complementing the look, she finished with glitter eye shadow and dramatic eyeliner. “Without a snatched cat eye, I just don’t feel like myself,” Velour confessed.

On the fourth season of “We’re Here,” the show’s first with its current cast, Velour, Hall, Royale, and Priyanka journeyed to small-town America, engaging with local LGBTQIA+ communities and staging drag shows in diverse locales. The season spotlights states like Oklahoma and Tennessee, regions experiencing a surge in anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation.

“When I first heard about ‘We’re Here,’ I envisioned it as the arrival of queer superheroes, which is very much how drag queens have to view ourselves,” Velour reflected, underscoring the powerful impact and visibility that drag culture brings through the Max series.
